They create a temperature difference when an electric current passes through them, or conversely, generate an electric current when exposed to a temperature difference (Seebeck effect). Both effects occur simultaneously in a current-carrying thermocouple. However, the Peltier effect is difficult to observe in metallic thermocouples.
